According to the U.S. Census as of March 1998:

• 46.6 million persons or 24 percent of all adults lived alone had never been married.
• 40.3 million or 20 percent of adults had been married and were widowed, divorced,
  separated or otherwise without the spouse present.
• 32 percent of children under 18 did not live with both parents

Between 1980 and 1998, the portion of children living with one parent grew
from 20 percent to 28 percent.
